45000 METRIC TONNES CASSAVA PROCESSING PLANT COMMISSIONED IN NIGERIA
In a bid to diversify investment from Oil, Nigeria’s Oil rich state has recently commissioned a Cassava Processing Plant at Afam, Rivers State. The Governor, Nyesom Wike alongside other government dignitaries were at the opening ceremony.
According to Ruben Giesen, managing director of the Rivers State Cassava Processing Company, the project is joint venture partnership between the state government (70 percent equity) and Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) of Nigeria. The project was conceptualised in 2012, but has taken over 8 years to develop due to funding issues in the partnership.
The processing company gets steady power supply from the Afam Power Plant, and when fully operational will employ over 4500 persons while having a huge economic impact on the local farmers.
These projects are lofty, but the challenge remains sustaining them to reach the maximum potential. This is something most African nations lack.
